White on white - A thousand words

Updated: Jul 4, 2023

Plastician artist and graphic designer Yiping Luo recently presented her revisited traditional Chinese calligraphy and ceramic work in the Parisian area.

La Maison des Arts Plastiques in Champigny hosted "White on white - A thousand words", an exhibition by Yiping Luo, from May 11 to 27. The space subtly combined 4 different artistic disciplines, namely, calligraphy, painting, ceramic and music played by the artist in person (truly!) in an atmosphere of zenitude.

Rhythmed by the Guqin, a traditional cord instrument dating back to Ancient China, calligraphic characters expressed themselves in all shapes and forms throughout the room, whether they be traced with joy, anxiety or nervous energy — carved, drawn or painted, black or white, big or small. They kind of speak by themselves if we may say!

I like to express my feelings through arts as a therapy, using my mind, body and brush with total commitment... I try to merge Chinese traditional arts with contemporary art in order to showcase the richness of Chinese culture on the art scene.

In this exhibition, a series of 8 wooden panels covered with 1000 porcelain characters presented the Chinese alphabet. Some letters popping out more than the others defined an embossed sound wave echoing a melody played on the Guqin by the artist, hence creating the illusion of a musical partition.

Along with those panels as well as meters of calligraphy writing rolls brashly hanging from the ceiling, one could appreciate screen-printed posters portraying different basic emotions of human beings (fear, anger, anxiety and relief). Each emotion could be felt through the brush trace that is more energetic in the case of anger for instance.

Smaller artworks such as an irregularly shaped ceramic tea set, a minimalistic broken heart with golden cracks and other abstract sculpted elements were also included in the exhibition.

Yiping Luo's next project would be to teach art therapy and why not open her own center welcoming anyone in need to feel better by practicing an artistic discipline! (Accueil (luoyiping.com)).
